Statement of Faith

These beliefs are foundational to what God is doing at Calvary Chapel Easton. We believe they are firmly rooted in the Word of God and as such all that we do flows out of that. This statement of faith is not an exhaustive list of every belief that we hold, but it is the foundation upon which we have asked God to build this church.

Core Beliefs

The Bible

We believe the Bible is wholly inspired by God, inerrant without error from beginning to end, and that in it we find the basis of all our faith and practices. We believe it is authoritative and as such believe it gives the foundation for living both individually and within the church. It has stood the test of time both in history, prophetic fulfillments, manuscripts, and more which further emphasizes the hand of God in every word in the Old and New Testaments. Because of all this, we believe the Word of God should be the center of everything that we do in our homes, the church, and our community and it supersedes man-made laws and beliefs that are in opposition to His commands in Scripture.

God

We believe that God is the almighty infinite Creator of all things. There is one God who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The triune God is one in essence and three in person, existing in perfect unity and equality of glory, majesty, dominion, and power. It is God who governs and upholds all things and He is a living personal God who desires relationship with men. He is righteous, holy, and perfect in all His ways and it is Him who sets the standard for what is right, true, and love because He is all of those things.

The Father

The Bible says the Person of God the Father, is an infinite, eternal, personal Spirit, who is perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love. He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of people, hears and answers prayer, and saves from sin and death all those who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Son

The Bible says the Person of Jesus Christ, is the only begotten Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is forever fully God from eternity and fully man from His incarnation. The Bible affirms His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, teachings, substitutionary and atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven to the right hand of the Father, perpetual intercession for His people, and imminent return to Earth in power and glory to rule for a thousand years.

The Holy Spirit

The Bible says the Person of the Holy Spirit, came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ. The Bible affirms that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Jesus Christ at the time of regeneration as an abiding helper, comforter, teacher, and guide. The Bible affirms that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate and distinct experience than that of regeneration, occurring either simultaneous with or subsequent to salvation, which is evidenced by a greater dynamic in the Christian’s life enabling him or her to be a bolder and more effective witness of Christ. The ministry of the Holy Spirit includes the enabling of Spirit-filled believers to exercise any or all gifts of the Spirit listed in the New Testament according to God’s will. The supreme evidence of the Spirit-filled life is the manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12-14

Humanity and Sin

We believe that God created man in His image. He created them male and female and designed them to be united as one in marriage. As a result of the fall, all people are sinners by nature and by choice. This sin, which is man’s inability to meet God’s standard of holiness, is offensive to the perfect righteous God. All of mankind has fallen short and needs regeneration and new life. The penalty of sin is death and eternal separation from the holy God. Because of the constant inability to keep God’s commandments, this separation between God and man can only be bridged by the perfect spotless sacrifice, Jesus Christ on the cross.
Genesis 1-3, Acts 3:19, 20:21; Romans 3:23, 6:15-23

Salvation

While mankind was in desperate need of salvation from their sin, God was never without a way. He made a way through Jesus coming to earth as a baby, living a perfect life, suffering and dying the death man deserved on the cross, defeating of death in His resurrection, and preparing a place for man in Heaven with His ascension. God allowed the Son’s blood to be shed in order to pay the price that was necessary for man’s redemption. It is God’s grace through faith that saves. Salvation comes when one turns from their sin, believes in God’s saving power through the blood of Jesus, and confesses Him as Lord.
Matthew 11:28; John 3:16; Ephesians 2:1-3, 8-9; I John 2:2; Revelation 22:17

Heaven and Hell

The Bible affirms there is a literal Heaven for those who place their faith in Jesus Christ and a literal Hell for those who reject Him. It is clear in Scripture that God desires for all to be saved, but that for those who reject Him there will be eternal separation in Hell. The Bible says there is a resurrection of both the saved and the lost – the saved unto everlasting life in the presence of God and the lost unto eternal damnation in separation from God.
Psalm 9:17;  Matthew 5:3, 5:22, 18:9, 25:31-34; Mark 9:42-49; Luke 12:5; John 3:18; Hebrews 12:23; I Peter 1:4; Revelation 14:10-11, 20:11-15

Church

We believe that the church is not a place but is God’s people who have been set apart for His glory and praise. Those who have accepted His salvation by grace through faith are called children of God and a part of His body. The Bible says the Church is the Body of Christ, the universal body of all born again believers of which Jesus Christ is the head. We believe gathering together is a critical part of our lives as followers of Christ because He calls His people to encourage one another to live godly lives, seek His face, and worship Him together. As the body of Christ, the church should be a place for all to come and experience the lifechanging truth of God’s Word and the depths of His great love. We believe God is the head of the church and that the Word of God and the Spirit must be the ultimate authority for all that the church does. The Bible says the Lord Jesus Christ instituted two ordinances for the church: the Lord’s Supper and water baptism. Communion is a memorial celebration open to all believers in Jesus Christ in order to remember the shed blood and broken body of Jesus Christ and the deep love that led Him to save us. Baptism is conducted by full immersion in water as an act of obedience and declaration that one has been made new by Christ’s redeeming blood.

Things to Come

We believe there will be a pre-tribulation rapture of the church when all believers will meet the Lord in the air and be taken out of this world prior to the Great Tribulation that will come upon the whole Earth. We believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, which is His personal, visible return to earth and the establishment of His millennial kingdom with His saints. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous and endless separation of the wicked.
Isaiah 26:20; Matthew 24:29-31; Luke 21:36; Romans 1:18, 5:9; I Thessalonians 1:10, 4:13-16, 5:9; II Peter 2:7-9; Revelation 3:10, 5:7-10, 7:13-14; Matthew 16:27; Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11-16, 20:11-15

Value of Life

The Bible says that life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-18), that man is body and soul, therefore every baby in the womb is an eternal soul (1 Thessalonians 5:23) and will live forever.  The Bible says that God makes every person in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) therefore is beyond measurable value in this world, and that no man has the right to take a life (Exodus 20:13, Matthew 5:21) whether in the womb or out of the womb, and there are no circumstances that justify taking the life of the baby (Deuteronomy 24:16).  Having an abortion is not the unpardonable sin (Romans 8:38-39, Matthew 12:31-32) and God will forgive those who have an abortion if they seek God and ask for forgiveness and repent of their sin and ask Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Savior (John 3:16, Romans 10:9-13).  Every child that dies in the womb enters into eternity because they were not of an age of accountability for sin (2 Samuel 12:22-23).  It is the responsibility of the church to stand beside every woman in her pregnancy and provide love and support (Matthew 22:37-39).
